can a soul go wherever it wants?

My uncle says that there are pious people living in the bottom portion of our house that cannot be seen but their presence can be felt. Is this true? Because when someone dies he is places in his grave, which is the world of Barzakh. So what can be the reason for this? And can a soul go wherever it wants?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

This is just a misconception of the questioner’s uncle. There is no basis for this in the Shari’ah. However, sometimes the shayateen takes the form of humans and does such things from which people may be deluded. This is why statements such as this should not be relied upon.

کما فی المرقاۃ: عن عبد الرحمٰن قال قال رسول اللہ – صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم - أن أرواح المؤمنين في طير خضر تعلق بشجرۃ الجنۃ۔قال ملا علی القاری فی شرح ھذا الحدیث وفي حديث أن أرواح المؤمنين في حواصل طير خضر ترعى في الجنة وتأكل من ثمارها وتشرب من مياهها وتأوي إلى قناديل من ذهب تحت العرش قال القرطبي وذهب بعض العلماء إلى أن أرواح المؤمنين كلهم في الجنة يعني أنه غير مختص بالشهداء ولذلك سميت جنة المأوى لأنها تأوى إليها الأرواح وهي تحت العرش۔( ۴/ ۱۱۳)

و فی شرح الفقہ الاکبر: و اعادہ الروح الی جسد العبد فی قبرہ حق (۱/١٧٠)

و فیہ ایضا: و لکن اختلفوا فی انہ ھل یعاد الروح الیہ و المنقول عن ابی حنیفۃ رحمہ اللہ التوقف الا ان کلامہ ھنا یدل علی اعادۃ الروح اذ جواب الملکین فعل اختیاری فلا یتصور بدون الروح اھ (ص:۱۱۷) واللہ اعلم بالصواب
