My wife is sick and she is not able to fast. Does she have to give the Fidya for 30 days or 60? And, how much money does she have to give?
If the questioner’s wife is afflicted with such a sickness that she is not able to keep fast in that state, nor is she hopeful of ever becoming healthy in future, then she will be responsible for fulfilling the Fidya for the entire month of Ramadan (i.e. 30 or 31 days). The Fidya for each fast is equal to the amount given as Sadaqa Fitr (2kg of wheat or its monetary value). However, if she is not able to fast due to a temporary ailment, then it is not permissible for her to give the Fidya of the fasts of Ramadan. In fact, in this scenario, she will omit the fast while she is sick and make up for it in future when she becomes healthy.
