Ruling on applying Mehindi to the beard

Is it Sunnah (an Islamic tradition) to apply Mehindi to the beard, or only Mubaah (allowed)? An elderly person has been doing this for his entire life thinking that he is practicing upon a Sunnah, but someone has informed him that it is not Sunnah, it is only Mubaah. What is the correct ruling? Is it Sunnah, or Mubaah?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

Applying Mehindi to the beard (as long as it is not purely black in color) is Mustahab and recommended. One should not apply it with the intention of practicing a Sunnah.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

فی الرد: أما بالحمرۃ فہو سنۃ الرجال (إلی قولہ) انہ علیہ السلام خضب فی وقت وترکہ فی معظم الاوقات ومذہبنا: أن الصبغ بالحناء والوسمۃ حسن اھ (۶/ ۷۵۶)
وفی الہندیۃ: عن الامام: أن الخضاب حسن لکن بالحناء والکتم والوسمۃ واراد بہ اللحیۃ وشعر الرأس ۔اھ. (۵/ ۳۵۹)
وفی الفقہ الاسلامی: الحنفیۃ قالوا یستحب للرجل أن یخضب لحیتہ ورأسہ. اھ (۲/ ۴۷) واللہ اعلم بالصواب
