Shaving the Beard upon the Request of Parents and Wife

I have kept beard because it is Sunnath to keep beard. Neither my parents nor my wife is happy about this beard and what their wish is that I should either trim the beard or shave. Please inform me whether one should obey the parents if they ask to trim or shave the beard?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
According to the unanimous opinion of the Jurists, it is Wajib for every Muslim male to keep beard, and shaving it off entirely or trimming it shorter than a fist's length is unlawful and Haram. Hence, it is not permissible for the questioner to shave his beard, and similarly, it is not correct for the questioner's family to request him to do such. Furthermore, it is not obligatory to obey the parents that which does not comply with the rulings of the Shari'ah.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

ففي مشكاة المصابيح: وعن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: [ص:1086] «السمع والطاعة على المرء المسلم فيما أحب وأكره ما لم يؤمر بمعصية فإذا أمر بمعصية فلا سمع ولا طاعة» متفق عليه اھ (2/ 1085)
وفيه ايضاً : وعن علي رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «لا طاعة في معصية إنما الطاعة في المعروف» اھ (2/ 1086)
و في صحيح مسلم: عن أبي هريرة، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «جزوا الشوارب، وأرخوا اللحى خالفوا المجوس» اھ (1/ 222)
و في الدر المختار: وأما الأخذ منها وهي دون ذلك كما يفعله بعض المغاربة، ومخنثة الرجال فلم يبحه أحد، وأخذ كلها فعل يهود الهند ومجوس الأعاجم فتح. (2/ 418) واللہ اعلم بالصواب
