Bowing towards someone when greeting them

Is it permissible to bow towards someone when greeting them as a form of respect (like the way people bow to pious people)?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

Bowing towards someone as a form of respect is extremely disliked (مکروہ تحریمی) as per Shari’ah. This is the way of the people of other nations and must be avoided.
And Allah knows best.

کما فی الرد: وقال شمس الأئمۃ السرخسی: إن کان لغیر اللہ تعالیٰ علی وجہ التعظیم کفر اھـ قال القہستانی: وفی الظہیریۃ یکفر بالسجدۃ مطلقا وفی الزاہدی الإیماء فی السلام إلی قریب الرکوع کالسجود وفی المحیط أنہ یکرہ الانحناء للسلطان وغیرہ اھـ وظاہر کلامہم إطلاق السجود علی ہذا التقبیل۔ اھـ (ج۴، ص۳۸۳)۔ واللہ اعلم
