Respected Mufti Sahib, Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh!
I would like to inquire: If a person has health insurance and receives an amount under this scheme, can that money be combined with zakat funds and utilized for good causes? Kindly guide me in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Note: There is life insurance, and there is health insurance.
It should be clear that most of the dealings of insurance companies are based on interest (usury) and other non-Shariah compliant transactions. Therefore, taking a health insurance policy from them is also impermissible in Shariah, and it is necessary to abstain from it. If someone has already taken such a policy, then at the time of need he may only benefit to the extent of the amount he has deposited in the form of premiums. Hence, the questioner should terminate the said policy, and if he has already benefited equal to the amount he deposited, that is preferable; otherwise, he may take back only that much amount.
