Respected Mufti Naeem Sahib, Dar ul-Ifta, Jamia Binoria Aalimiyah, Karachi. Honourable Sir, it is submitted that across the world, thousands of men and women are entering the fold of Islam, and no unpleasant incidents are occurring. In contrast, in Pakistan, there is frequent uproar against our Muslim sisters. I wish to ask you: if a girl embraces Islam and marries a Muslim man, a great commotion is stirred up, even though the girl clearly states that she has accepted Islam by reciting the Kalimah of Tawheed and that she wishes, of her own free will, to live her life with her husband. However, our courts arrest such girls and confine them in state shelters (Darul Aman), causing them such distress that it discourages others from embracing Islam. Honourable Sir, my question to you is: according to Shariah, what should our government and courts do in such matters? I hope you will kindly provide guidance in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith.
The conversion of any man or woman to Islam anywhere in the world is a great good deed, a proof of Islam’s truth, and a matter of pride for all Muslims. Therefore, Muslims everywhere in general and Muslims in Muslim countries in particular, should praise this act and encourage those who undertake it. If, as the questioner states and as newspapers also indicate, converts in Pakistan are being harassed and discouraged, that is deeply regrettable. Apart from being a shocking example of hostility towards Islam, it is a serious sin and a disgraceful stain on the blessed country of Pakistan. Hence the government of Pakistan and the judges of the high courts should take Suo moto action against those who commit such reprehensible acts and major sins, and should impose the severest penalties on such elements so that others are deterred and Pakistan’s reputation in the world is not tarnished.
