Ruling on the Use of a Spice in Which a Cockroach Has Been Ground

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. It has come to my knowledge that cockroaches are sometimes present in coffee, and that while grinding coffee, cockroaches may also get ground along with it. In such a case, is the coffee considered Halal? May Allah reward you all with goodness.

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

It should be understood that the small insects which do not have flowing blood do not render a substance impure merely by being present in it while alive. However, a cockroach is one of those creeping creatures that naturally cause revulsion in humans. Therefore, if a cockroach happens to be ground up in coffee, it is better to avoid using that coffee.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

کما فی الفتاوى الهندية: الحيوان في الأصل نوعان: نوع يعيش في البحر ونوع يعيش في البر، أما الذي يعيش في البحر فجميع ما في البحر من الحيوان يحرم أكله إلا السمك خاصةً فإنه يحل أكله إلا ما طفا منه، وأما الذي يعيش في البر فأنواع ثلاثة: ما ليس له دم أصلا وما ليس له دم سائل وما له دم سائل، فما لا دم له مثل الجراد والزنبور والذباب والعنكبوت والخنفساء والعقرب والببغاء ونحوها لا يحل أكله إلا الجراد خاصة، وكذلك ما ليس له دم سائل مثل الحية والوزغ وسام أبرص وجميع الحشرات وهو أم الأرض من الفأر والجراد والقنافذ والضب واليربوع وابن عرس ونحوها ولا خلاف في حرمة هذه الأشياء إلا في الضب فإنه حلال عند الشافعي - رحمه الله تعالى، (الباب الثاني في بيان ما يؤكل من الحيوان وما لا يؤكل، ج:2، ص:289)-
