Ruling on hoarding rice
What is the Islamic ruling on storing rice in the current circumstances, and for how long can it be stored with the intention of selling it at a higher price later? Also, what does Islam say about hoarding other food items and everyday essential goods?
الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً
Hoarding food items during times of public need is prohibited in Islam. However, if there is no urgent need, then there is no set time limit for storing such items. As for non-essential luxury or decorative goods, hoarding them is not prohibited.
مأخَذُ الفَتوی
ففي تكملة فتح الملھم: ثم ذهب اكثر الفقهاء إلى ان حرمة الاحتكار مختصة بالاقوات، فأما الادام، والحلوا، والعسل ، والزيت، واعلاف البهائم فليس فيها احتكار محرم - والثالث : ان يضيق على الناس بشرائه الخ ( الى قوله ) واما احتكار الاشياء الأخرى فيفوض إلى راى الحاكم ، فان راى فى احتكارها ضررا شديدا نظير الضرر في الطعام منعه والا اجازه اھ (۱/ ۵۵۶، تا ۵۵۸) -
