What do the honorable Muftis say regarding the following issue? I work in a shop, and the entire responsibility of the shop is on me. We needed to purchase a machine for the shop, so my owner told me that I should take one or two thousand rupees daily from the shop, keep it aside with me, and then purchase the machine. Since the shop’s money is in my hands, I have collected thirty thousand rupees (30,000 PKR) with the permission of the owner. At present, our old machine is still functioning, but I now have a personal need. Can I use this collected amount for my personal requirement for ten days and then return it afterward? Also, please explain the ruling regarding any profit earned from this money within those ten days. Will that profit belong solely to me, or will it be shared between both of us? Kindly explain this issue in the light of Fiqh and Hadith.
Using the owner’s money for personal needs without his permission is undoubtedly an act of betrayal, which is not permissible, and one must avoid it. However, if the owner gives permission to take a loan from the shop’s money for a few days to fulfill a personal need and then return the amount afterward, then this is permissible in Shariah. In such a case, any profit earned during this period will belong entirely to the employee.
