The ruling of faith and disbelief regarding not giving money in the name of love for the Messenger ﷺ.”

While I was on my way, due to a genuine necessity, I had to take a lift from someone. He asked me, ‘What can you do in the love of the Messenger (ʿIshq-e-Rasool)?’ I replied, ‘We do what the Shariah tells us to do.’ He then said, ‘Can you give me 50,000 in the love of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I am testing you.’ In this way, through emotional and faith-related talk and by mentioning the Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, he took 32,000 from me, which I gave out of love for Allah and His Messenger. As soon as he took the money, he disappeared. If I had not given him the money and had not fallen for such talk, would my not giving it have taken me out of faith (īmān)?”

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

“Loving and having deep devotion for the Noble Prophet ﷺ is a part of faith. However, expressing this love by giving financial assistance to someone is neither legally obligatory nor necessary in Shariah, and a person will not be considered to have left the fold of Islam for not providing such assistance. Therefore, the act of the person mentioned in the question—emotionally manipulating the questioner in order to take money—was extremely wrong and un-Islamic. Nevertheless, due to his sincere emotions and love, the questioner is deserving of reward and recompense. However, in the future, caution should be exercised against such fraudsters.”
