Assalamu Alaikum I wish to know the number of Rakaat in Tharaweeh. How many Rakkats did Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam offer? Some people quote narration of Hadhrath A'isha Radhiyallahu Anha from Buhary and Muslim and say that he used to offer only eleven (11) Rakaaths?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

Tharaweeh consists of 20 Raka’ath, hence it is Sunnath to perform 20 Raka’aths of Tharaweeh and this has been established through the practice of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam as well. Upon this, the Ijma (Consensus) is recorded of the Majority of the Ummah, the respected Sahaba Radhiyallahu Anhum, Thabi’een (their successors) Rahimahumullah and all the four great Imams Rahimahumullah. And the Ahadees which mention about 8 Raka’aath are, in reference to the Thahajjud Salath which Rasoolullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam used to perform irrespective of Ramadhan and other months. He used to perform the same number of Raka’aath in Thahajjud. Therefore it is not correct to implicate this as evidence for Tharaweeh or as evidence for 8 Raka’ath in Tharaweeh and it is essential to refrain from doing so.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

کما روى عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما:أن رسول الله صل الله عليه وسلم كان يصلى في رمضان عشرين ركعة والوتر اھ( مصنف ابن الشيبة/2/286 ) ۔
وعن يحيى بن سعيد:ان عمر بن اھطاب امر رجلا يصلى بهم عشرين ركعة اھ(ايضاً 2/285 ) ۔
وعن السائب بن يزيد:قال كانوا يقومون على عهد عمر بن اھطاب في شھر رمضان بعشرين ركعة قال وكانوا يقرأون بالمئين وكانوا يتوكأون على عصيهم في عھد عثمان بن عفان رضی الله عنه من شدة القيام اھ(سنن الكبرى للبيهقي :/2/699 )۔ وعن يزيد بن رومان:قال كان الناس يقومون في زمان عمر بن اھطاب في رمضان بثلاث وعشرين ركعة اھ (ايضاً)-
وفي مرقاة المفاتيح لملا على قارئ وكونها(اي التراويح) عشرين سنة اھلفاء الراشدين، وقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام :(عليكم بسنتي وسنة اھلفاء الراشدين) (إلی قوله) لكن اجمع الصحابة على ان التراويح عشرون ركعة اھ(3/ 382) -
وفي الدر:التراويح سنة مؤكدة لمواظبة اھلفاء الراشدين اجماعاً (إلی قوله) وهى عشرون ركعة اھ - وفى الشامية تحته : (قوله وهي عشرون ركعة) هو قول الجمهور، وعليه عمل الناس شرقا وغربا اھ ( 2 / 43/45) ۔
