Reciting Surah al-Ikhlas in All Three Rak‘ahs of Witr Prayer

Assalamu Alaikum, Honorable Mufti Sahib! I would like to ask: In the Witr prayer, is Surah al-Ikhlas recited after Surah al-Fatihah in all three rak‘ahs, or should different Surahs be recited after Surah al-Fatihah in each rak‘ah? I usually recite Surah al-Fatihah followed by Surah al-Ikhlas in the first two rak‘ahs of Witr, and in the third rak‘ah, after reciting Surah al-Ikhlas, I say the Takbir and then recite Du‘a al-Qunut. Is this method also correct? Kindly grant me an answer to this issue at your earliest convenience.

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

It should be clarified that it is a Sunnah practice to recite Surah al-A‘la in the first rak‘ah of Witr, Surah al-Kafirun in the second rak‘ah, and Surah al-Ikhlas in the third rak‘ah. Therefore, if the questioner has these Surahs memorized, he should make an effort to follow this practice. One should not, without a valid reason, recite Surah al-Ikhlas in all three rak‘ahs. However, if the questioner does not know any Surah other than Surah al-Ikhlas, then due to necessity, it will be permissible to recite Surah al-Ikhlas in all three rak‘ahs.

کمافی رد المحتار:(قوله: و السنة السور الثلاث) أي الأعلى و الكافرون والإخلاص، لكن في النهاية أن التعيين على الدوام يفضي إلى اعتقاد بعض الناس أنه واجب وهو لايجوز، فلو قرأ بما ورد به الآثار أحيانًا بلا مواظبة يكون حسنًا، بحر الخ(باب الوتر والنوافل، ج:2،ص:6،ط:سعید)۔
وفی الدر المختار: لا بأس أن يقرأ سورة ويعيدها في الثانية، وأن يقرأ في الأولى من محل وفي الثانية من آخر ولو من سورة إن كان بينهما آيتان فأكثر الخ(فصل ویجھر الامام، ج:1،ص:546،ط:سعید)۔
