Gathering funds to provide food for the family of the deceased

Is it permissible to gather money from people to organize food for the family of the deceased, from which both the people contributing the money and the family of the deceased will partake in?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

This form of assistance is permissible as per Shari'ah.
And Allah knows best.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

كما في حاشية ابن عابدين: (قوله وباتخاذ طعام لهم) قال في الفتح ويستحب لجيران أهل الميت والأقرباء الأباعد تهيئة طعام لهم يشبعهم يومهم وليلتهم، لقوله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - «اصنعوا لآل جعفر طعاما فقد جاءهم ما يشغلهم» حسنه الترمذي وصححه الحاكم ولأنه بر ومعروف اھ (2/ 240)
