Wearing an Abaya over jeans and other types of clothing

If a woman wears an Abaya over jeans or a maxi dress, will that be considered as Pardah (observance of the law of Hijab) according to the Shari’ah?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

If a woman wears an Abaya over her jeans, maxi dress, etc. and her entire body is concealed, then she will have fulfilled the objective of Pardah according to the Shari’ah. However, these kind of clothes must not be worn by a woman in front of Non-Mahrem men, even if they are her relatives.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

کما فی أحکام تجمیل النساء تحت شروط الحجاب: الشرط الاوّل: استیعاب جمیع البدن، یدل علی ذلک قول اللہ عزوجل ﴿ولا یبدین زینتھن إلا ما ظھر منھا﴾ وقولہ تعالٰی ﴿یا ایھا النبی قل لأزواجک وبنٰتک ونساء المؤمنین یدنین علیھن من جلابیبھن ذٰلک ادنٰی ان یعرفن فلا یؤذین وکان اللہ غفورا رحیما﴾ [النور، الاحزاب] فالاٰیۃ الأولی فیھا الدلیل علی وجوب ستر جمیع الزینۃ وعدم اظھار شیئ منھا أمام الأجانب الا ما لا یمکن اخفاءہ (إلی قولہ) والاٰیۃ الثانیۃ فیھا الأمر بادناء الجلابیب تمییزًا لھن عن سمات نساء الجاھلیۃ والاماء، والجلباب غیر الخمار، اذ أنہ فوق الخمار۔ (ص٢٧٧) واللہ سبحانہ اعلم
