What do the esteemed scholars and respected Muftis say regarding the following issue: We have a shop in the market, and on Fridays, when the adhans (calls to prayer) begin, we are usually present in the shop. There are three mosques located near us, all at roughly the same distance from our shop. One mosque gives the adhan approximately one hour before the Jumu‘ah prayer, the second mosque about 45 minutes before, and the third mosque around 30 minutes before the prayer. Now our question is: According to which adhan should we close our shop? Can we continue selling to customers who are already seated in the shop at the time of the adhan? Also, if we sell something after the adhan, is the money earned haram (prohibited) for us? What is the ruling in this case?
In the matters mentioned, the adhan of the mosque in one's own locality or the mosque where one performs Jumu‘ah prayer is considered valid and should be followed. Therefore, once the adhan is called in that mosque, all buying and selling should be stopped. Continuing business transactions after that adhan is considered makruh (disliked), and the income earned through such transactions also carries the same ruling.
