Is it permissible to work in a bank where the environment is based on interest? My employment is due to necessity because my family’s financial condition is not good, while I know that interest is prohibited in Shariah.
Any employment in a bank that is directly connected to interest-based transactions—such as the position of a manager, cashier, etc.—is strictly impermissible (haram), and the salary received from it is also unlawful. As mentioned in the hadith: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who consumes interest, the one who gives it, the one who writes it down, and the one who bears witness to it," and he said: "They are all equal in sin."
Therefore, if the questioner is engaged in such a job, it is obligatory upon him to leave it and seek alternative employment where involvement in interest-based dealings or other unlawful activities is not required. However, until he is able to find such permissible employment, there is temporary concession to remain in the current job while considering it impermissible in principle, but he must not be negligent in actively searching for a lawful alternative.
Am I entitled to my salary during the time it takes to fulfil legal documents before I begin working?
