Ruling on Collecting Donations from People for Performing ‘Umrah

What do the honorable scholars say regarding this issue: During the Shan-e-Ramadan Sehri Transmission on ARY News in the last fast of Ramadan, my name was drawn, and I won an ‘Umrah ticket. Now, the departure date is February 21. I used to work at a pharmaceutical company called OBS Pharma. Some colleagues there helped me. I wish to take my mother along with me. I cannot afford it at all; I live in a rented house. My own ticket costs 114,452 rupees, and there is also the issue of food expenses. My mother’s ticket costs 152,288 rupees. With some effort, I have managed to collect 140,000 rupees. Some colleagues want to help me further. I want to know: can I accept this assistance, and if I do, will my ‘Umrah be valid?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

If the questioner is in need, he may take a loan or accept assistance from a friend or relative. However, without necessity, it is not permissible to take a loan or seek assistance from people for this purpose, and such an action must be avoided.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

ففی صحيح البخاري: أن حكيم بن حزام رضي الله عنه، قال: سألت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فأعطاني، ثم سألته، فأعطاني، ثم سألته، فأعطاني ثم قال: «يا حكيم، إن هذا المال خضرة حلوة، فمن أخذه بسخاوة نفس بورك له فيه، ومن أخذه بإشراف نفس لم يبارك له فيه، كالذي يأكل ولا يشبع، اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى» اھ (2/ 123)۔
