The ruling on three divorces given in one sitting.

My friend, in a state of anger, pronounced the words of divorce to his wife three times in one sitting. The night before this incident, they had also had marital relations. Is there any possibility of Ruju (reconciliation) remaining? Awaiting your answer.

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

It should be clearly understood that, according to the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Islamic jurisprudence, three divorces pronounced in one sitting, whether stated in a single sentence such as “You are divorced three times,” or in separate sentences such as “You are divorced, you are divorced, you are divorced” are counted as three divorces.
There is consensus (agreement) on this ruling among the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) and the revered Followers (Tabieen, may Allah have mercy on them). This is also the established position of the four Imams of the Ummah, Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik, Imam Shafii, and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on them all). Therefore, in the case mentioned, since the questioner’s friend pronounced the words of divorce three times upon his wife in a state of anger and in one sitting, all three divorces have taken effect, and an irrevocable (haram-e-mughallazah) separation has been established.
Hence, reconciliation (Ruju) is no longer possible, and they cannot remarry unless the woman lawfully marries another man and that marriage ends naturally (halala e shariyyah). Both must immediately separate and must not continue any marital relations; otherwise, they will both be committing a grave sin. After completing her iddah (waiting period), the woman will be free to marry any other man.

عن عائشۃ رضی اللہ عنھا انّ رجلا طلّق امرأتہ ثلاثا فتزوّجت فطلّق فسئل النبی ﷺ أتحلّ للاوّل قال لا حتی یذوق عسیلتھا کما ذاق الأوّل۔ (بخاری: ج۱، ص٧٩١)۔
عن محمود بن لبید رضی اللہ عنہ قال اخبر رسول اللہ ﷺ عن رجل طلّق امرأتہ ثلاث تطلیقات جمیعا فقام غضبان ثمّ قال أیلعب بکتاب اللہ وانا بین اظھرکم حتی قام رجل وقال یا رسول اللہ ألا أقتلہ (رواہ النسائی 2/ ٩٩)۔
وفی الشامیۃ: وذھب جمھور الصحابۃ والتابعین ومن بعدھم من ائمّۃ السّلف إلٰی أنّہ یقع الثلاث۔ (ج٣، ص٢٣٣)۔
