Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah, I have been granted the facility to purchase a house through the Government of Pakistan’s “Mera Ghar Mera Aashiana” scheme via an Islamic bank. The bank states that this facility is based on Diminishing Musharakah and that there is no interest involved. My questions are: Is this scheme compliant with Shariah? Is it permissible to participate in this scheme? Kindly provide guidance. May Allah reward you with goodness
In the mentioned case, according to the details provided by the questioner, if indeed the “Mera Ghar Mera Aashiana” scheme is offering the facility of purchasing a house through an Islamic bank, then — since most financial transactions of Islamic banks are conducted under the supervision of a Shariah Board consisting of qualified and reputable scholars — purchasing a house under this scheme is permissible in Shariah. However, it is necessary to ensure that no element of interest (riba) is involved in any part of the scheme.
