Assalamu Alaikum
My question is: if a husband, in a state of anger, says to his wife, “If you go out of the house, I will give you a thousand divorces,” but the wife does not go out and instead returns to her room, and the husband’s intention was only to frighten her, then what is the ruling in this case? Thank you.
In the present case, if the person indeed used the words, “If you go out of the house, I will give you a thousand divorces,” merely to frighten his wife, then since these words constitute a promise of divorce in the future rather than an actual pronouncement of divorce, no divorce has taken effect as a result of these words. Likewise, even if the wife were to go out of the house in the future, no divorce would occur on the basis of this statement. However, it is necessary to refrain from using such words even for the purpose of threatening or frightening one’s wife.
